Villa Valmarana ai Nani

Villa Valmarana ai Nani is a marvellous architectural and artistic site composed by three buildings and a wide 18th century park. For its magnificent frescoes it is universally considered the highest expression of the painting of the eighteenth century and one of the highest examples of the Tiepolo’s genius. In fact the owner Giustino Valmarana hired the greatest painter of his time, Giandomenico Tiepolo who, together with his son Giambattista painted the Palazzina (Owners’ Residence) and the Foresteria (Guest-House). The subjects of the Palazzina are taken from Giustino's favourite readings : the Iliad, Aeneid, Furious Orland, Liberated Jerusalem and the grand Sacrifice of Iphigenia. In the Guest-house Giandomenico, according to the spirit of the time describes the Chinese world, the aristocracy, the people, the Carnival. In the two houses one feels the different matrices which, as J.W. Goethe noticed, have inspired the Tiepolos: Giambattista's vocation towards the “sublime” and Giandomenico's towards the “natural”. The only portrait by Palladio who worked for a long time for the Valmarana family can be admired in the Guest-house.
