IL CASTELLO DI RIVALTA

The Castle of Rivalta is one of the very few European examples of a manor house surrounded by an ancient village that has remained largely intact to this day, and it is still inhabited by the family of Counts Zanardi Landi, who have owned the property since the end of the 13th century.
Tens of thousands of tourists coming from all over Italy and abroad visit this exclusive and highly suggestive location every year, drawn by its unique history, atmosphere and charm.
The Castle contains 54 rooms, all embellished with period furniture and carpets dating from the 1400s onwards. Over time, these spaces have been adapted to accommodate guests whose needs have naturally been subject to change over the course of the centuries.
Kings and Queens, Princes, Noblemen and Heads of State from all over the world have passed through these doors and continue to spend time here, and it was indeed in this magical place that Princess Margaret (Queen Elizabeth’s sister) chose to spend many of her summer holidays for several years.

THE HISTORY OF CASTELLO DI RIVALTA

The earliest information concerning the existence of Rivalta Castle dates back to a Purchase Deed signed in 1025.
Subsequently and as evidenced in documents from the time, Emperor Henry II donated a part of the building to the Monastery of San Savino of Piacenza in 1048.
Some thirty years later, the rest of the complex was also ceded to the monastery, which therefore increased in wealth and importance as a result.
For over a century, all the documented noteworthy events relating to the Castle involved a series of sieges and upheavals, and a succession of different owners.
Obizzo Landi became Lord and master of Borgo and its fiefdom from the first decade of the 14th century, having purchased the property from the Ripalta family. Since that date and right up to present day, the Castle has always belonged – with a few brief interruptions – to the Landi family.
In 1895, both the Castle and the surrounding hamlet were purchased by Count Carlo Zanardi Landi of Veano, a descendant of Pietro Zanardi Landi, one of the claimants in the partition disputes that took place back in the 14th century.
Counts Zanardi Landi, the current owners, have been responsible for the magnificent restoration and embellishment of the estate as you see it today.
