The original nucleus of Villa Fontalba dates back to the first half of the 6th century. The central body served as a Byzantine watchtower defending the ancient Roman bridge on the Via Flaminia Vecchia from the time of the Greco-Gothic wars, when the area was the site of fierce battles between the Goths and the Byzantines.
A section of the ancient Via Flaminia now corresponds to the long tree-lined avenue incorporated within the Villa’s park. At the end of the 19th century, the building was converted into a country manor house and subsequently restored in accordance with the principles of the Neo-Gothic style, with stone and wrought iron exterior walls, and the addition of battlements and mullioned windows with stone columns. The Italian-style garden on two levels with its centuries-old trees is from the same period.
