On Saturday, October 11th, the Italian Historic Houses Association (ADSI) will inaugurate the third edition of the national event “Carte in Dimora. Archives and Libraries: Stories Between Past and Future”, which will accompany the initiative “Domenica di Carta” (“Paper Sunday”), promoted by the Ministry of Culture. For several years now, this initiative has featured the opening of public libraries and State archives, and this year it is scheduled for Sunday, October 12th.
Over 110 private historic archives and libraries, located in castles, fortresses, and villas across Italy, will be open to visitors, offering a journey through the history of our country via places rich in precious traces of our past. Visitors will have the opportunity to admire up close rare and valuable examples of books, papers, correspondences, manuscripts, and collections beyond just books.
“Carte in Dimora” is part of ADSI’s yearly efforts to raise awareness among civil society and institutions about the vital role historic homes play in the social, economic, and cultural fabric of Italy.
Our Association supports the Ministry’s initiative to emphasize a shared cultural purpose, recognizing that many historic homes possess libraries and archives full of valuable remnants of our past, worthy of being shared just like public collections.
Private historic archives and libraries, with their documents, books, and manuscripts, offer tangible evidence of the evolution of territories and how historic homes represent a fundamental and essential part of Italy’s cultural heritage. Thanks to their widespread and constant presence in every city, town, and village across the country, they not only embody local history, but can and must serve as pillars for the sustainable development of the regions they represent—and of their future.
