The history of the Castle of Castagneto Carducci
"The conspicuous and famous family of the Gherardescas, who in the splendor of the Pisan Republic holds such a luminous place, and that in its great misfortunes offered immortal subietto to the divine muse of Dante, lost the dominion of Pisa remained nevertheless owner of a vast territory and majestic castles. Many were these but for various events they remained in different times dismembered. A portion of the ancient County forms the territory of the Community of which Castagneto is the capital, in the past Gherardesca. There are many houses forming the current Castle, enlarged with a large village. »
The Castle of Castagneto Carducci, built by the Counts della Gherardesca in the year one thousand, belongs to the family from thirtyfive generations. Like the other castles of the Maremma Pisana was erected by the della Gherardescas to defend the coast threatened by the Saracen raids. It became the family's headquarters from the middle ages to the nineteenth century when Count Ugolino, ancestors of the current owners, moved to Castagneto leaving the Castle of Bolgheri, until then the main headquarters, to his younger brother Walfredo Fazio.
The Castle holds the memories of the bonds with the most important dominants of Italy such as the Imperial House of Swabia, the Kings of Aragon, Castile, with the Este, the Aldobrandeschi, Counts Guidi, Gonzaga, with Principles of Urbino, Carpi, of Montefeltro, of Treviso, with the Savelli, Orsini, Carrara, Appiani and the Royal House of de Medici.
The della Gherardescas in the Divine Comedy
Among the family's ancestors the best known is surely the Count Ugolino to whom Dante Alighieri dedicated one of the most famous and moving canto of the Divine Comedy. His statue, which welcomes the visitors in the Castle's courtyard, is a copy of the one found at the Metropolitan Museum of New York and the Musée D'Orsay Paris.
