The Castle of Piovera
The Castello di Piovera is an articulated and very scenic structure surrounded by a moat and a vast park. Visitors can explore the monumental complex on foot or aboard vintage cars and an original Red Bus making a pleasant trip (by reservation).
In addition to numerous exhibited collections in the ancient granaries (wagons, roots, agricultural and craft tools) in the medieval stables transformed into a laboratory, the owner keeps creative art lessons. The cellars are an ideal place for tastings and exhibitions. The English garden offers various locations for events, weddings, company conventions.
The Castle is located in a flat area, near the main highways of the North-West at 5 km from the Alessandria Est motorway exit on the A21 TO-PC.
The Balbi Castle of Piovera rises in the rural area of Piovera and dominates the small square with its imposing façade. It took on the appearance of mighty fortress in the 1300 by work of the Visconti of Milan. In later times it passed to the Spagnoli, To French and by Savoy ai Balbi. From 1967 the Count Niccolò Calvi di Bergolo is the current owner.
The Castle is a complex horseshoe-shaped fort, among the largest in the area, with oval towers and two massive quadrangular towers; all defended by a moat and a wall.
The layout of a vast English park of 30 hectares and the construction of buildings dating back to the 18th century, adjacent to the garden with its rare and secular trees, gave the whole ensemble a decidedly romantic look.
The complex can be visited entirely and is furnished from the cellars to the towers: in the parts that have remained enchantingly authentic as a home, animated by mannequins with period clothes, and through the modern contrast and extraordinary invention constituted by the works by Niccolò Calvi di Bergolo, a versatile and authentic artist and owner of the castle.
The rural village arose in ancient times facing the castle with those houses that still reverence it, which became the granaries of the estate and which today house the museum of the Ancient Crafts.
