The Castle of Miradolo in Pinerolo
Established in the 2008 in Pinerolo, the Cosso Foundation aims at cultural and artistic promotion, humanistic and scientific research, and the enhancement of the Piedmont area.
The planned initiatives, mostly carried out in the recovery areas of the Castle of Miradolo, are many and range from exhibitions to theatrical and musical events, from training courses to interventions in social activities. The Foundation, diversifying in its lines of action, tries to offer to those who want to join its projects, a new reality capable of highlighting the potential of the territory and at the same time highlighting the resources that are part of it.
The Miradolo Castle is a building located at the entrance to the Val Chisone, consisting of a noble part and a rustic part, whose layout dates back to the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, subsequently redesigned and enlarged in the second half of the nineteenth century. The Castle was the home of the ancient Massel and Cacherano di Bricherasio families.
A park of over six hectares surrounds the Castle and still today reveals the design guidelines and the taste of those who began to outline it at the end of the eighteenth century and of those who, later, oversaw its expansion during the nineteenth century. Inspired by the informal English garden, the park is characterized by a vaguely oval shape enriched and made pleasant by loops of luxuriant vegetation that overlook a large central clearing and which have a romantic landscape appearance.
At the entrance the visitor can see the very high and wonderful Tassodi; the high box hedges that run towards the large central lawn embrace guests who can move in peace to observe, among others, the old rate, the high Sequoia, the large bamboo forest and the historic Ginkgo Biloba. The presence of numerous waterways and the particularly favorable position from a climatic point of view, make the place a site of considerable interest also from an ecological point of view, making it an ideal habitat for many animal and plant species.
Since 2007, thanks to numerous restoration and enhancement interventions, the park has returned to embellish itself with important botanical collections already dear to the Countess Sofia of Bricherasio, the last heir of the family of the Cacherano di Bricherasio Counts and a great admirer of nature and art . She chose romantic old roses, rare Idranges and elegant Camellias for the park.
The greenhouse is located along the southwest façade of the castle. The plant is nineteenth-century and is part of the overall design, harmonious and elegantly balanced, which characterizes the entire castle.
The restoration of the greenhouse, restoring the original volumes and materials, has allowed to give back to the Castle an extraordinary space, in which the neo-gothic arches and the large windows allow the light to become the protagonist. The greenhouse is currently a space suitable for concerts, conferences, installations, small exhibitions and various moments of meeting and entertainment.
The history of the Castle of Miradolo
In order to enhance the architectural complex, the Cosso Foundation has undertaken an in-depth historical research aimed at reconstructing the memory of the Castle, both through archival sources and through the most recent oral testimonies.
The first certain news link the history of the Castle, initially remembered as a simple "cassina", to the family of the Macello who, although they did not own any fiefdom, were the main owners of the territory. Giovanni Battista Macello changed the name of his family from Macello to Massel and subsequently expanded his possessions, buying the Marquisate of Caresana.
In 1866 the Marquise Teresa Massel married Luigi dei Conti Cacherano di Bricherasio, who, as a wedding gift to the bride, had the ancient and rustic "cassina" of the countryside renovated into a noble residence of neo-Gothic taste, the one we can still see today .
Sofia and Emanuele were born between the two. The latter, who died prematurely in the 1904, was among the founding members of FIAT, the first major Italian automobile company. Sofia, remembered for her intellectual and social commitment, was a pupil of the painter Lorenzo Delleani, a regular guest in the cultural cenacle built around Sofia itself.
The Countess Sofia di Bricherasio, the last heir of the family, died in 1950 leaving the Miradolo Castle to the religious Province of San Marzano of don Orione, who made the palace a house for spiritual exercises. In the following years a series of interventions were carried out that did not respect the original plant and finally the property was abandoned.
In 2007 the whole complex, in a state of neglect since the XNUMXs, was bought by a group of private individuals. The new property, with the desire to bring to light the origins of the Castle and to restore its history to the territory, has launched an impressive restoration project and has entrusted the Cosso Foundation with the management of initiatives that can make it, as in the times of the Countess Sofia di Bricherasio, cultural reference point and laboratory of ideas.
