The Castle of Montalto in Castelnuovo Berardenga
Il Castle of Montalto probably born before the year 1000 and is well documented from the eleventh century onwards.
Remarkable was the Battle of Montalto in the 1208, which created huge damage so as to make the Florentines rejoice "Montaltum est factum planum / Montaltum nomine vanum ...."
Built between Siena e Arezzo, guarding the river Amber and of an ancient Roman road, Montalto della Berardenga he was always loyal to Siena in the eternal dispute with Florence. Its long history can be read in the stones: from the perhaps Lombard tower to the fourteenth century 'torraccia', to the Renaissance portico, up to the Gothic-romantic merlons of the happy restoration of the nineteenth century.
It was the residence of the family Berardenga until the fourteenth century, when it was incorporated by Siena. In the sixteenth century it was ceded as an independent seigniory a Giovanni Palmieri on the promise of defending it at his own expense against the Florentine threat. After the victory of Florence and the troops of Charles V, the Palmieri remain as simple owners and decorate the Sala d'Armi with frescoes.
In the 1970 the castle is taken over by a relative, Giovanni Coda Nunziante. Today his family carries on the farm and the parallel activity of agritourism and holiday homes.
