The Palazzo delle Clarisse in Amantea
In the splendid setting of the Calabrian Tyrrhenian coast rises the seventeenth-century Palazzo delle Clarisse: a scenario of rare beauty, on the edge of the ancient urban nucleus, located on the top of a cliff once lapped by the waters of the sea. The architectural structure is articulated on several levels, following the profile of the rocky spur on which are distributed the volumes of the church, the convent and the cloister, open on the coastal landscape with its wide arches.
Of the ancient church, now incorporated into the palace, there are the beautiful mullioned windows with a spiral column, a poly-lobed window and the large stone arch, covered with frescoes depicting stylized flowers and swirls. The unparalleled charm of a historic 1600 building blends into the unique atmosphere of the period residences including frescoes and refined furnishings. The beautiful panoramic terraces of the structure offer a breathtaking view of Mount Etna and the island of Stromboli.
All around the historical center of Amantea is admirable. Located at 400 meters from the Amantea seafront, the Palace is located at 15 minutes walk from the beach. You enter the Palazzo delle Clarisse from the great seventeenth-century door and climbing the princely staircase, after admiring the great arch of the Chapel of St. Clare, you enter the reception floor that has a capacity of 240 invited with its large rooms : the Music Hall, the Marquis Hall, the Bishop's Hall, the Mother of the Abbess Room, the Choir Room, the Pleiades Room, the Hall of the Arab Stele. Crossing the halls of this ancient home is like walking through history. On summer evenings the Roman torches create a particular fairytale atmosphere. The floral decorations, the porcelains, the mirrors, the crystals and the silverware contribute to the preciousness of the environment. From the Music Hall you can see the Cloister of St. Clare from above, accessing directly to two of the three large panoramic terraces from which you can enjoy a divine view of the Tyrrhenian Sea.
Inside the palace you can admire a remarkable collection of copies of the great masters of Flemish painting, Impressionism and the twentieth century European. The Palazzo delle Clarisse currently houses a quality Hotel and Restaurant, as well as being a promoter of cultural activities and events. In the restaurant, beautifully restored and equipped with a well-equipped kitchen, private receptions, weddings and gala dinners take place, in the Palazzo there is a small chapel.
The palace preserves important works of art, including an 11th-century Arab burial stele, a seventeenth-century wooden statue of St. Clare, and various noble coats of arms in stone. The historical charm, together with the breathtaking panorama, make this structure an exclusive location for organizing events. The panoramic terrace, the cloister and the internal rooms are an ideal photographic and cinematographic set.
The history of the Palazzo delle Clarisse
The origin of the name of the Palace derives from its birth as a Convent of the religious order of the Franciscan Poor Clares. The unmarried daughters of the patrician families led to the convent life of their parents to avoid the hereditary fractionation of the patrimony. The structure shows a squat body, stretched towards the sea and to which a small church is connected. The monastic complex was built in 1620, in the place where the Palazzo Folleri stood, purchased by the nuns in 1618 because the old convent of the Pinta neighborhood, opened in 1603, was inadequate to the needs of the religious, due to small size and excessive proximity to private homes, which was very disturbing to the enclosure.
The Napoleonic conquest led to the suppression of the convent in the 1810 and the property, confiscated together with other ecclesiastical assets, was put up for sale by the government and subsequently purchased by Carlo De Luca of the Marquis of Lizzano, with a deed signed the 3 November 1812. The Marquis de Luca of Lizzano made it his noble residence. The new transformation to a private home determined numerous structural changes, including the transformation of the church, with the inclusion of a princely staircase inside and the closure of many windows and mullioned windows. The cloister, instead, was transformed into a vegetable garden and its arches were walled up. The Marquis De Luca lived in the palace up to 1977.
After a period of neglect and serious degradation, the building was purchased and restored by the current owner, prof. Fausto Perri. The palace preserves important works of art, including an 11th century Arab funerary stele, an important archaeological document that testifies to the Arab presence in Amantea between the end of the 9th and the first half of the 11th century. It is a fragment on which a Koranic verse is carved: "It did not generate nor was it generated and no one is equal". It also preserves a wooden statue of the seventeenth century depicting St. Clare, and various noble stone coats of arms belonging to noble families.
The precious and laborious restoration of the 1988 allowed to reacquire the ancient atmosphere of the convent.
Currently the Palazzo is home to a Hotel and a Restaurant of excellence
