In ancient times, Minervino of Lecce it was called "lo re de li casali" (as can be seen from an epigraph carved on the side door of the Parish Church of San Pietro, AD 1473): around it, in fact, the villages of Cerfignano, Cocumola and Specchia Gallone gravitated.
He was elected a defense bulwark against the Turks by King Ferdinand I of Aragon, who had a castle built there; unfortunately, following the events of the capture of Otranto of the 1480 the castle was conquered and subsequently destroyed by the Turks themselves.
The Saracen raids forced the population to take refuge in the hinterland, so much so that the feud, where Minervino would later rise, began to repopulate itself only in the early years of the sixteenth century. His continued growth led him to count well 16 villages around the middle of the seventeenth century, including the village known as "Giudeca", inhabited by a Jewish colony, and the main village, called "Minervino".
Minervino was also a fief of the Venturi family, which built two palaces there: the Old Castle and the New Castle. Nowadays we can admire how the latter, despite the restructuring, has preserved all its original charm intact.
The Venturi were an ancient and noble family originally from Salerno; they arrived in Terra D'Otranto in the 14th century, with Jacuzio by Tomaso Ventura of Salerno. The lineage was divided into several branches, some of which are now extinct.
In the 1414, following the marriage of Giacomo Venturi with the feudatory Antonia Sembiase of Cosenza, owner of the duchy of Minervino, a branch of this dynasty moved to the province of Lecce. Another branch of the Ventura, instead, moved first to Copertino and, subsequently, to Galatina; while a third branch, coming from Modugno, was imported to Bari.
Many were the fiefdoms that this ancient and noble family owned in Terra d'Otranto: in fact, the Casali di Morigino, Palmariggi, Castro, Maglie, Melpignano, Cerfignano (half of 1480) and Minervino (two third parties were sold by the Ventura) from Filomarino to Ventura in the 16th century). It was precisely on the fief of Minervino that Giuseppe Maria Ventura, with Diploma dell'11 September 1683, obtained from King Charles the title of Duke of Minervino. The Venturi family expanded its possessions buying several feuds over the centuries, such as that of Giurdignano, in the 1378, Giuggianello, Miggianello and Depressa some decades later, Cocumola, Castiglione and Caprarica del Capo in the 1583. Finally, the fief of Tuglie was donated by Filippo Guarino to his nephew Giuseppe Ferdinando Ventura, Duke of Minervino, with instruction from 14 on October 1726 by way of the Notary Mangia.
Today Palazzo Ducale Venturi - Luxury Relais & Wellness offers all the comforts to its guests, maintaining the fortified character of the manor: distinctive signs of the defensive function of the building are, in fact, the slits on the crown of the attic wall that runs along the facades, and the gargoyles in stone shaped like a cannon; a lookout tower rises to the right side of the main façade and the drains are present in correspondence of all the windows of the first floor.
