The History of Palazzo Patrizi
The building was purchased in the 1596 by Giovanni Francesco Aldobrandini and in the 1611 modified by Donna Olimpia Aldobrandini who commissioned the present façade, according to a preliminary design by Giacomo della Porta, which was then made executive by Carlo Maderno. In 1642 the palace passed to the Marquis Patrizi, of Sienese origin, but related to many Roman families including the Marquises Montoro and the Marquises Naro, custodians of the famous Vessillo of Santa Romana Chiesa.
At that time, Mariano Patrizi commissioned a Raffaello Vanni the frescoes depicting scenes from the ancient testament in the rooms on the main floor of the building. The important collection of paintings inside the Pinacoteca was largely collected thanks to the passion and patronage of two papal treasurers: Costanzo Patrizi (1589-1624) and Giovanni Battista Patrizi (1658-1727) interested in what better was the Roman scene of their time.
Among the most important masterpieces, a "Rape of Europe" of Francesco Albani and the famous "Saint Jerome who seals a letter" of the Guercino. As part of this collection, Palazzo Patrizi also held the second version of the "Emmaus Dinner" of Caravaggio (today in Brera).
Among the most significant archaeological pieces, the statue of the Amazon is a very rare example of this subject, a Roman copy of a Hellenistic original of considerable technical level.
