The history of the Villa del Cardinale
The Villa was built in 1629 by Cardinal Gerolamo Colonna on the land given him by Pope Urban VIII Barberini, who loved these places to practice his great passion: hunting. The structure is the work of the architect Antonio Del Grande, who is also attributed the Cathedral of Rocca di Papa and the Church of San Barnaba in Marino.
The entire complex stands on the remains of a patrician villa, the traces of which are still evident today: columns, capitals and friezes dot the entire perimeter of the property. According to historical sources, Roman consuls and condottieri reached this place to start the Feriae Latinae, festivities dedicated to Jupiter Laziale for the victories achieved in battle.
With Prince Egidio, the third son of the Colonna family and the Cardinal's younger brother, the Villa began to welcome illustrious guests. The Prince, in fact, used to organize large parties in honor of the papal court of Castel Gandolfo, offering all his hospitality to the various Popes who followed one another in the seventeenth century.
In this place, every stone, every shadow keeps jealous memories away and the Villa, thanks to its history and its architectural and natural beauties, still reflects the thought of Petrolini, who called it "the most beautiful of the Castelli Romani villas" .
