The history of Villa Sommi Picenardi
The ancient castle of the Picenardi, owned by the noble family since the middle of the '500, starting from the approximately 1770 was gradually transformed by the Marquises Ottavio Luigi and Giuseppe Picenardi, in a beautiful and luxurious country villa.
The structures of the villa are developed around the main courtyard, accessible by a drawbridge, to the left of which is the ancient courtyard of the "castellotto", the oldest part of the complex purchased by the Picenardi in the 1526. The wing on the left side of the courtyard of the villa is called "le cappuccine basse", interrupted in the middle by the BV Visitation Center; in the important façade of the right wing there is the entrance to the interior, with richly decorated rooms and apartments, including the big one Bibliopinacoteca, designed by L. Voghera and completed in 1817 to house the very rich collection of books and paintings by the Picenardi, then dispersed.
The villa became important beyond national borders especially for the Picenardi Garden, one of the first examples in Italy of "English" garden, reported, celebrated and visited by personalities of the time, writers, naturalists, kings and queens.
The Picenardi, starting from 1772 and for about forty years, realized what would become their most significant project; hills were created, a lake was created and some ponds, islets, meadows, paths, bridges, avenues, reconstructed Roman ruins, brought and placed original finds and much more.
Villa Sommi Picenardi remained the exclusive property of the family of the Marquises Sommi Picenardi for over 400 years until 1954, from the year 1963 is owned by the Cassani family.
