Villa Valmarana ai Nani
Villa Valmarana ai Nani is composed of three buildings, the Palazzina (Owners' Residence) erected in 1657, the Foresteria (the Guest House) and the Scuderia (the Stables), both built in 1720 surrounded by a large historical park. The Villa owes its name to the statues of the 17 stone dwarfs most likely developed upon the drawings of Giandomenico.
The Valmarana family still lives in the Villa which is universally considered the highest expression of the painting of the eighteenth century and one of the highest examples of the Tiepolos’ genius.
The Palazzina and the Foresteria are frescoed by Giambattista and Giandomenico Tiepolo, father and son, invited in 1757 by Giustino Valmarana to paint his house. The artists’ different matrices: Giambattista’s vocation towards the “sublime” and Giandomenico’s vocation towards the “natural” (as per J. W. Goethe definition) can be all found there.
Both father and son worked in the Palazzina, Giambattista is at the height of his artistic maturity. He paints, upon the suggestion of the owner, his grand epic poems choosing when possible sentimental episodes: Iliad, Aeneid, Furious Orland, Liberated Jerusalem and the magnificent Iphigenia in Aulis on the main hall.
Both father and son worked in the Foresteria. In fact, the first three rooms: Chinoiseries, Peasants and Promenade are by Giandomenico. However, it is Giambattista that painted the next room on the Gods of the Olympus and the black servant (Alì) who descends the trompe-l’oeil staircase in Giandomenico’s Venice Carnival room.
The only existing portrait of Andrea Palladio - who worked extensively for the Valmarana family – hangs in the main Hall.
