You don't really realize how much beauty lies beyond a simple wall with ocher shades. But the reality is that Vico XII San Giovanni, in the heart of Villanova, has the extraordinary power of preserving a unique architectural jewel: Villa Vivaldi Pasqua.
The date of its construction is still unknown, but we know with certainty that in the second half of the eighteenth century, the villa was used by the Vivaldi as a summer residence, or as a hunting lodge. Around it, a vast area rich in vegetable gardens and vineyards, in which there were three churches: San Rocco, San Giovanni and San Mauro.
A four-century-long history
The eighteenth century was, in fact, a truly important century for the Sardinian economy, thanks to the Savoy reforms that allowed commercial exchanges, and also thanks to the obligation imposed on owners to renovate their homes. The hunting lodge was in fact embellished and made even more spacious by the will of Don Pietro Vivaldi, Marquis of Trivigno and Pasqua, the first who came to Sardinia with the aim of building the first fish ponds in the south of the island. The works of the house were then concluded in 1801 with the small initial nucleus transformed into a luxurious villa.
Unfortunately, the situation was reversed due to the financial collapse that forced both the sale and rental of some fish ponds, including the sale of some family properties. In 1850, Villa Vivaldi was sold to Count Calvi of Milan, who chose not to live there, but only to rent it, causing it to gradually deteriorate.
In the seventies, Rosabianca, daughter of the industrialist Marino Cao, succeeded in restoring the villa in a skilful and accurate way, giving it a new life after having bought it from the last heir of the Calvi family, Donna Giulia Calvi.
