Le caves of Frasassi, considered the largest underground complex in Europe, they are caves karst underground that are located in the territory of the municipality of Genga, in the province of Ancona. The complex of caves falls within the Regional natural park of the Gola della Rossa and of Frasassi.

The complex consists of a series of caves of which the first, which can be visited from the current entrance, is theAbyss Ancona, huge cavity that has an extension of 180 x 120 meters and a height of 200 meters.

Since 1972 it has been under the protection of the Frasassi Consortium, consisting of the municipality of Genga and the Province of Ancona, with the aim of safeguarding and enhancing its scientific and tourist usability.

From 1º September 1974 part of the caves is open to the public, becoming over time one of the major tourist attractions of the Marche; it is estimated that since then 12 million people have visited them.

Inside the karst cavities you can admire natural sculptures, formed by calcareous stratifications during 190 million years thanks to the work of water and rock.

The tourist route begins with a visit to the first cave, or the Abyss Ancona, it is one of the largest caves in the world, with the naked eye it is difficult to establish its size, as it lacks a precise point of reference, often the interior space is compared to the bulk of the Milan Cathedral. In the cave there is a huge stalactite, about 2, 40 meters long.

After the Abyss Ancona meets the Hall of the 200, the name derives simply from the length of the cave, 200 meters precisely.

Later it meets the Grand Canyon, full of gorges and crevasses, among these crevasses are the waters of the Sentino river, then continue towards the Sala dell'Orsa, characteristic for the presence of some wells from which sulphurous waters flow, the tour then continues towards the Sala Pagliai and Infinity Room.

The duration of this route is about 45 minutes.
