Protected by the Italian Ministry of Cultural Heritage, Caprarica Castle Palace is a remarkable example of architectural evolution, tracing its transformation from a fortified medieval tower (castrum) to an elegant baronial palace over the centuries.

A Legacy of Strength and Prestige
The palace incorporates the ancient castrum, first documented in 1533, which once served as a crucial defensive outpost. Positioned strategically, it connected Lecce Castle to Otranto Castle, a s well as coast al watch towers such as Roca, San Foca and Torre dell’Orso on the Adriatic Sea and Gallipoli Castle on the Ionian Sea.

From the late 16th century, as military threats diminished, these fortified towers lost their defensive role and were transformed into noble residences. In 1675, the Giustiniani family, nobles from Genoa, purchased the estate and began constructing the palace. Later, in 1780, the Rossi family, an influential Neapolitan dynasty, acquired the property and continued its expasion. In recognition of his accomplishments, Costantino Rossi was granted the title Baron of Caprarica in 1783.

    A Reflection of Royal Influence
During the Bourbon reign in Naples (1735-1860), French-inspired architectural elements and furnishings were introduced, including grand portals, mirrored halls, and opulent frescoes.

The palace also played a role in Italy’s Risorgimento. Following her trial and acquittal for conspiracy, the celebrated patriot Antonietta De Pace, a key figure in southern Italy’s struggle for unification (1848-1871), took refuge in the palace under the supervision of her uncle Gennaro Rossi, Baron of Caprarica and judge of the Bourbon Court. Her historic bedroom, featuring a valuable antique bed, is open to visitors today.

The Tower and Gardens: Echoes of the Past A 18th-19th century tower, designed in the style of 16th-century defensive structures adds to the estate’s unique character. Positioned to create a striking visual perspective from the veranda, the tower serves as a reminder of the original castrum, now fully integrated into the palace.

The palace gardens date back to the 16th century, retaining their original fortified perimeter walls with distinctive square patterns. After 1850, the grounds were redesigned in the Baroque style, featuring symmetrical flower beds and elegant pathways. Exotic plants, including mimosa, bougainvillea, jasmine, and wisteria, reflect early 20th-century British gardening influences.

Visitors can also explore the historic bread oven and c e l l a r, where vaulted ceilings showcase traditional stone craftsmanship.

A Living Heritage Today, the descendants of the Rossi family continue to reside in the palace, personally welcoming visitors and working alongside the Caprarica municipal administration to host cultural events and celebrations with in this extraordinary historical setting.
