Palazzo Alliata di Pietratagliata

Palazzo Alliata di Pietratagliata in Palermo, built in 1473, represents the culmination of five centuries of Sicilian art history, showcasing layer upon layer of architectural and decorative stratifications. Its crenellated tower still soars imperiously on high. It was the tallest building in the city at the end of the 15th century and its principal façade was unique, due to its mullioned windows, single lancet windows and a corner window that was one of the rarest examples of its kind in the Mediterranean, typical of late Catalan Gothic architecture.

The beautifully preserved interiors boast some of the most significant examples of Rococo style in the whole of Sicily, including the extraordinary frescoes painted by Vito D’Anna in 1762, which adorn the ceilings of the salons. In the ballroom, where the painter celebrated its Prince’s many virtues, there is an enormous and extremely valuable 18th-century Murano chandelier with 100 lights (measuring 2.75 m x 2.75 m), considered to be the largest known of its kind. In the 20th century, prominent architects such as Ernesto Basile and Vincenzo Palazzotto contributed to making this building one of the masterpieces of Sicilian Neo-Gothic architecture, due to its interior decorations.

The history of Palazzo Alliata di Pietratagliata
Originally commissioned by the Termine family, a prestigious Catalan family that acquired the title of Princes of Baucina over the course of the centuries, the Palazzo was sold in 1748 to the Marassi Dukes of Pietratagliata. In 1810, the last member of the Marassi dynasty, Maria Cirilla, married Luigi Alliata di Villafranca, bringing the residence and the title of Duke of Pietratagliata as part of her dowry. From that moment forward, the home was renamed “Palazzo Alliata di Pietratagliata“. The current owners are the direct heirs of the two families who both owned and commissioned the Palazzo. Their marriage represents one of the most extraordinary cases of uninterrupted habitation in a private residence in history.
