History
The palace is located in Verona’s historic center, in the area between piazza Bra and Castelvecchio. Tracesstill visible in the cellars testify to the neighborhood’s pre industrial past in Roman times. The current building was begun in the late 17th century, but construction was long interrupted, and the structure took on its final appearance in the 18th century only.
Palazzo Verità – Poeta owes its fame to the exquisite cycle of 18th century frescoes that decorate the interior. The palace’s frescoes depict mythological end allegorical scenes, a testament to the cultural richness of the period. The spectacular decorative scheme was commissioned by the weathy wool merchant Pio Ferrari, a member of a Veronese entrepreneurs active in European markets, particulary in Germany and Flanders.
The entire decorative scheme dates back to 1764, the year in wich several artists, all present in Verona at the same time, collaborated on his creation. The most famous of these is undoubtedly the designer Antonio Bibiena, who two years later designed the Teatro Sociale in amntua end the Teatro Comunale in Bologna. Alongside Bibiena other artists who worked on the palace’s rooms included Anselmi, Maccari, Pavia, Boscarati and Lorenzi, the latter a right-hand man of the celebrated Tiepolo.
Complex historical events led the palace to become the property of the Verità – Poeta family and, today, by inheritance, it belongs to the noble Bevilacqua family.
