Tenuta Marchesi Alfieri in San Martino Alfieri
The estate is home to the Marchesi Alfieri wine company, which primarily produces high-quality Barbera d’Asti DOCG wine. Part of the property has been renovated to welcome wine enthusiasts throughout the year.
The history of Tenuta Marchesi Alfieri
In ancient times, under the rule of the Bishop of Asti, the Castle belonged to the Solaro family, who were the lords of San Martino. The Alfieri family succeeded this lineage and managed to reunify the estate through the exchange and acquisition of other properties. In 1696, the family carried out significant renovations, transforming the Castle into a splendid Baroque residence, characterised by simple lines and in perfect harmony with the surrounding landscape, which is peppered with vineyards.
The project was realised in 1721 by engineer Bertola. Many accomplished craftsmen hailing from the Comacine school embellished the rooms with stuccoes. Those in the main hall are the work of the Catenazzi brothers, who were originally from Lugano. Around 1820, the residence was modified one final time under the direction of architect Ernesto Melano.
