The Moroni family began acquiring land in Stezzano in the mid-1400s, but the majority of their acquisitions were made at the beginning of the 17th century and continued for two centuries, with the consolidation of important land and real estate property holdings focused on silkworm production.

In 1654, Francesco Morone introduced a type of legal trust in his will stipulating an “entailment with male lineal descent”, which in essence ensured that the family assets were passed down through the generations, usually to the eldest male descendants. In 1680, this resulted in the Moroni brothers cataloguing their patrimony room by room, referring to “the other furnishings in the Villa in Stezzano”, which included a considerable quantity of furniture, tapestries and paintings in some 28 reception rooms and bedchambers.

In 1815, Count Antonio Moroni, an illustrious figure in the history of Bergamo and a member of the Council of Lyon in 1802, who also served as Chamberlain of the Duke of Saxe-Weimar before the same position was occupied by the great man of letters Goethe, commissioned Architect Giacomo Bianconi, formerly a student of Piermarini, to remodel the previous 17th-century building in order to create a neo-Classical-style Palazzo in accordance with the architectural canons of the time.
