The idea of exploring Lazio is usually synonymous with visiting Rome, the Castelli Romani and Tuscia. But this region really has so much more to offer! With this itinerary, our aim is to encourage you to \u2018step outside the box\u2019 and broaden your appreciation of this area, which is typically overshadowed by the better-known landmarks on the map. Our journey instead charts a route from north to south, travelling from Sabina to Ciociaria. We begin northeast of the capital, bypassing Rome completely and ending our trip in Cassino, almost in Campania, driving through locations that have huge historic importance and seeing some equally historical residences.
\nThe starting point is a short distance from the Fiano Romano motorway exit. After passing through the toll barrier, cross the Nazzano Tevere-Farfa Regional Nature Reserve<\/a> and head towards Poggio Mirteto, an ancient village in the province of Rieti, and Montopoli di Sabina, close to the medieval hamlet of Bocchignano. Five kilometres beyond the Benedictine Abbey of Santa Maria di Farfa<\/a>, which is nestled in a characteristic Borgo and contains a national heritage library<\/a>, you will reach Palazzo Martini<\/strong><\/a>. Built in the 15th century, this residence originally served as a guesthouse for the cloistered nuns of the Poor Clares of Fara in Sabina, as it was owned by the local monastery. Today it is managed by the Martini family and is an ideal venue for private events in Fara in Sabina. The Palazzo is exclusively available for receptions, corporate events, weddings (with the possibility of holding a civil ceremony on-site) and conferences. It is possible to visit the Manfredi, Brancaleoni and Orsini palazzos in the village, while in the vicinity you have the Oil Museum of Castelnuovo di Farfa<\/a>, as well as the largest olive tree in Europe<\/a>, located in Coltodino. Be sure to take a photo at the Belvedere Fara in Sabina before heading on to Poggio Moiano, near the Fosso della Mola waterfall. From there, follow the road to Lake Turano<\/a>, passing through the villages of Colle di Tora and Castel di Tora. Our route then takes us to Collalto Sabino<\/a>, recognised as one of Italy’s most beautiful villages, thanks to its majestic castle. Situated in the mountains at an altitude of one thousand metres, it is aptly nicknamed the \u2018Eagle’s Nest\u2019 at the border between Lazio and Abruzzo. Rome is but twenty minutes away by motorway, but it is like being in a completely different world here.
\nThe second historical residence on our itinerary is here in Collalto. Palazzo Latini<\/strong><\/a>, which dates back to the 15th-century, offers hospitality to visitors keen to investigate this area which spans the provinces of l’Aquila, Rieti and Rome. In addition to the Palazzo, we recommend you discover the baronial castle with its 16th-17th century fa\u00e7ade. Within the Castle is a large park with an ancient well and a keep providing a 360-degree panorama from Gran Sasso to Terminillo and Maiella. The convent of Santa Maria and the ruins of the ancient Montagliano castle and its borgo<\/em>, which were progressively destroyed between 1280 and 1400, are well worth exploring just outside the village. As it is now time for a well-deserved culinary break, why not stop off for lunch at the C\u2019era una volta<\/a> trattoria in Colle di Tora, overlooking Lake Turano, where you can tuck into traditional Lazio dishes such as coratella <\/em>(offal of lamb or goat), trippa alla romana<\/em> (a traditional Roman dish made from beef tripe) or abbacchio<\/em>\u00a0 (lamb).
