The history of Borgo Sant'Ambrogio has its roots in the 17th century, when the oldest part of the complex was built. The main building dates back to the 1600s, while the wings to the south and north and the adjacent outbuildings housing the agritourism farmhouse, restaurant and meeting hall were constructed in the early 20th century.

During the 18th century, Sant’Ambrogio was a monastery for nuns devoted to the Milanese saint of the same name (of whom a portrait of the time still remains). Beneath the 19th-century frescoes which adorn the main farmhouse, a further layer of frescoes dating back to the previous century has been uncovered.

In 1971, the estate, owned by the Contucci family of Montepulciano, was acquired by Ranieri and Maria Teresa Apollonj Ghetti. Captivated by the beauty of the surrounding nature reserve and the centuries-old history of the Borgo, they chose Sant’Ambrogio as the ideal setting to enjoy the riches of the Tuscan countryside together with their six children.

Even today, two generations later, their heirs safeguard this rich natural and historical heritage, and are continuing the work begun almost fifty years ago by Ranieri and Maria Teresa. The elegant and discreet restoration and redevelopment work has preserved the historical stratifications of the complex, enhancing the harmony between past and present.
