THE CASTELNUOVO TANCREDI ESTATE EXTENDS OVER MORE THAN 600 HECTARES IN THE ROLLING HILLS NEAR SIENA, MONTALCINO AND THE VAL D’ORCIA

Tenuta Castelnuovo Tancredi extends over more than 600 hectares between the rolling hills of Siena, the slopes of Montalcino and the Val d'Orcia. In addition to the central Villa, the estate comprises 5 farmhouses, some of which are used as cellars and offices, while others have been renovated to accommodate guests.

The Villa consists of 9 bedrooms with en-suite bathrooms (including a suite at the top of the tower with a 360° view of the Crete Senesi landscape), an ‘antique’ kitchen equipped with all modern amenities, a dining room, two large living rooms with original painted beams, two frescoed lounges and various outdoor spaces for relaxing during the summer months. In the park, there is also a swimming pool, a tennis court and a beautiful Wellness Spa with a gym and a sauna.

Throughout its history, the estate has been managed by notable feudal families such as the Guglieschis, the Borghesis, the Tancredis (from whom it gets its name), and the current owners. The Venturini Del Greco family have been present since 1897 and have preserved the flavours and traditions of the past while completely modernising the activities carried out at the Castello complex.

As early as 1315, the hills around the Castle had small oak forests, arable land and widespread cultivations of olive trees and vines. By the early 1700s, the olive and grape cultivation had become a significant enterprise, with up to 40 hectares of vineyards in production and thousands of olive trees, justifying the presence of a nursery, an oil mill, and numerous wine cellars.

In 1995, with the recognition of Orcia as an ‘indicazione geografica tipica’ or IGT, foreshadowing the future creation of the Val d'Orcia DOC, the current owner, Guido Venturini Del Greco, decided to strive for producing wines of exceptional quality rather than focusing on quantity. As a result, the vineyards were reduced to 8 hectares in the late 1990s, and new grape varieties like Merlot, Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon were introduced alongside Sangiovese, Trebbiano and Malvasia, which are considered part of the region's DNA.

Today, the company adheres to organic farming methods for all its processes, manages arable land for cereals and forage crops and produces extra virgin olive oil under the Olio DOP (Protected Designation of Origin) label.

THE HISTORY OF CASTELLO DI CASTELNUOVO TANCREDI

The Castle's origins date back to the construction of the tower in 1000 A.D. The tower initially served as a granary and was later used as the headquarters for Sienese troops during the siege of Montalcino in 1199, which lasted for 16 months. On this occasion, the Sienese ultimately prevailed, forcing Montalcino to surrender, more due to hunger rather than from the use of brute force.

In the 1500s, Cardinal Tancredi commissioned the Villa, giving rise to the current central structure of the Castle. During the same period, the chapel adjacent to the villa was designed and built by architect and painter Baldassare Peruzzi, who also created the still-existing wine cellar, which is located at the entrance of the long avenue of ancient cypress trees leading to the Castle.

During World War II, German troops occupied Castelnuovo Tancredi, coexisting for an extended period, albeit not without some difficulties, with the women of the Venturini Del Greco family.

The Castle recently underwent a two-year restoration project that enhanced its historical value while equipping it with all modern comforts. The extended duration of the work was a deliberate choice by the family, whose main prerogative was and still is the preservation of the interior architecture. The old floors were removed, restored and repositioned, without altering their original design. All the fixtures were renovated to enhance their thermal performance without the need for replacement. Particular attention was paid to the frescoes and colours of the interiors, which were faithfully restored without diminishing their authenticity.
