THE HISTORY OF CASTELLO DI JERAGO

The construction of Castello di Jerago dates back to the early 13th century, and the events that unfolded within its walls are mostly mostly associated with the Visconti family of Jerago. Like most medieval manors, it was built for defensive purposes and constituted part of the defensive line north of the Duchy of Milan.

The fiefdom was granted in 1248 by Ottone Visconti, Archbishop of Milan, to his brother Gaspare and his nephew Pietro. In 1402, the Castle was attacked by enemies of the Visconti family. Several members of the Visconti di Jerago family held positions of some importance in the civil administration of the Duchy. Antonia married Carmagnola, a ‘condottiero’ mercenary whose adventures inspired ‘Il Conte di Carmagnola’ the first tragedy written by Alessandro Manzoni. Elisabetta married Cicco Simonetta, a famous ducal secretary during the time of the Sforza family.

The Castle was also the scene of conflicts at the time of the battles in the Gallarate area between the Spanish and the French. The Visconti of Jerago family line ended with the death of Antonio in 1751.

At the end of the 18th century, the fortress was converted into a residence. Windows were opened on the south side and two garden terraces were built, which can still be admired today.

Before reaching the Castle on the left, visitors pass a small Romanesque edifice, which is the Church of San Giacomo. The interior contains traces of frescoes from different periods. Beneath two recesses intricately carved into the wall's depth, there is a dry fresco painting on display, believed to originate from the ninth century. The church is dedicated to Saint James because it was part of the route taken by pilgrims on their way to Santiago de Compostela. The walls were decorated with frescoes depicting the life of San Giacomo.
