CASTELLO DI SAN SALVATORE

A striking and perennial icon of the Treviso landscape, Castello di San Salvatore lies in the heart of the Veneto region, enfolded in the embrace of the gently rolling Prosecco hills. For the past eight centuries, it has dominated the plain leading up the glorious city of Venice. An impregnable fortress in the Middle Ages, the Castle was an elegant noble residence during the Renaissance, and a celebrated salon for artists and literary figures from all over Europe, forever eclectic both in terms of its architecture and its very soul. Today, it serves as a truly distinctive, unique venue for memorable events, just as it always did in the past.

THE HISTORY OF CASTELLO DI SAN SALVATORE

Of very ancient Lombard descent, the Collalto family traces the roots of its history back to the ‘Marca Trevigiana’ or March of Treviso, the medieval territory around the region of Treviso, where they were Counts of Treviso around the year 1000.  Between the 12th and 13th centuries, they settled between the Pre-Alps and the Piave River, founding the castles of Collalto and San Salvatore. Located in a strategic position that controlled critical fords and roads, Castello di San Salvatore was quick to expand. With its 30,000 square metres, comprising the fortress dedicated to the court and the hamlet inhabited by farmers and craftsmen, it soon became one of the largest fortified complexes in Europe.

Over the centuries, this dynasty saw a succession of valiant soldiers, skilled diplomats, capable feudal lords, generous patrons and important religious figures, including the notable Blessed Giuliana, and last but not least, an alluring family attendant named Bianca, whose tragic story led to her becoming a legend.

Throughout the Middle Ages, San Salvatore Castle resisted invasions while, during the long period of peace with the Venetians, it became the perfect stage for an extraordinary artistic flowering, with musicians, painters, writers and poets choosing to settle here. The value and fame of the Castle grew exponentially, making it the privileged setting for paintings by renowned artist Cima da Conegliano. It was here that Monsignor Giovanni Della Casa, a revered guest of the Collalto family, composed his famous “Galateo: The Rules of Polite Behaviour” in the 16th century. And it was amidst the 'woods of trees and foliage' all around the San Salvatore Castle that Gaspara Stampa, the greatest woman poet of the same century, sang of her heart-rending love for Count Collaltino di Collalto in her wonderful opus entitled ‘Rhymes’.

In the 18th century, Count Odoardo, aspiring to his prestigious nomination as Doge of the Most Serene Republic of Venice, ordered an impressive Palazzo to be built as a grandiose demonstration of his power. At that time, the noble Collalto family divided their time between Italy and Moravia, where they obtained the title of Prince of the Empire in 1822.

In the 20th century, the First World War devastated the area, and when the front moved from the Isonzo to the Piave River, San Salvatore Castle became a target of Italian artillery and was severely damaged. However, the Collalto family was not to be discouraged. Instead, they initiated a passion-filled phase of recovery of their extraordinary historical and artistic heritage, that had been defended with tenacity and cherished for centuries. The restoration project continued up to the threshold of the new millennium and, in 2003, Prince Manfredo inaugurated the newly-restored castle, now returned to its former glory and once again the splendid setting for memorable events that we can be enjoyed today.

The heir to this historic and unique tradition is Princess Isabella Collalto de Croÿ, the firstborn child of Prince Manfredo and Princess Trinidad di Collalto. She has personally overseen the Conte Collalto winery since 2007 and she has also taken charge of the Castle of San Salvatore since 2018. With the refinement and style befitting a true princess and the same unequalled dedication and love that made possible the preservation of the dynasty heritage and of its entire territory during its millennium-long history, Isabella Collalto opens the gates of this exclusive residence, sharing the charm of its elegant spaces and ancient secrets with her guests.
