THE HISTORY OF CASTELLO VICCHIOMAGGIO IN GREVE IN CHIANTI

An abbreviated history of a family passion:

1921: Federico Matta, originally from Asti, began importing wine to London and 30 years later became the Number 1 importer of Italian wines in the UK.

1964: Castello Vicchiomaggio, a property of 150 hectares in the Chianti Classico region, containing 32 hectares of vineyards, was purchased by the Matta family.

1970: After attending the Viticulture and Enology school in Alba (Piedmont), Federico’s son John Matta embarked upon his career at Vicchiomaggio.

1990: A significant project to completely renovate the vineyard was initiated, replanting the vines in line with John’s philosophy, with a density of 5,600 vines per hectare to ensure low yields and high quality. All the cultivation methods are carefully chosen to ensure Sustainable Viticulture practices that have a very low environmental impact: Particular attention is given to the importance of soil characteristics in order to minimise erosion, which can be problematic in hilly areas.

2010: Assisted by his wife Paola, three out of their four children joined the company. Sebastian oversees production and sales, while Federica and Delfina focus on the development of accommodation and hospitality services, including the charming bedrooms, apartments and the restaurant.
