THE HISTORY OF THE CONVENTO DELL’ANNUNCIATA

The convent, together with its adjacent house and vegetable garden, was originally a donation made by a private oratory, assigned to the Hermits of St Augustine by means of a papal degree by Pope Callistus III in 1455. Emperor Charles V, who had come to Medole Castle for a political meeting with the Gonzaga family, stayed at the convent on 28 June 1543 and donated a precious silver-bound liturgical breviary to the Augustinians.

Subsequent restoration of this ancient 15th-century convent after a great many years of neglect, and the creation of a large park designed according to specific naturalistic criteria, were daunting challenges from both an ecological and a historical-artistic point of view. The results, however, have been more than gratifying: hares, herons, squirrels and foxes clearly appreciate the natural habitat that has been restored to them. Our efforts have also been appreciated by prestigious magazines such as Vogue and Corriere della Sera, which have described the Convento dell'Annunciata as "breathtakingly beautiful".
