Contact the abode

The Hermitage of Santa Maria Maddalena stands in splendid isolation on the Colle di Gritta incline, at a distance of about 3.5 km from the small town of Monterosso al Mare. It consists of two buildings: the church to the north and the monastery to the south, the two wings connected by an internal cloister. The original cells have now been transformed into living quarters. The property is arranged over 3 levels. The entrance is on the cloister floor and is used as a summer living-dining room, leading to the hallway entrance, the kitchen, the TV room with its fireplace, two bedrooms with bathrooms, a study and a belvedere sun terrace with incredibly beautiful views of the surrounding hills. A staircase leads to the lower garden level, which was once used as a cellar. In addition to two bedrooms with bathrooms and a laundry room, there is also a spacious living area and a dining room overlooking the garden and the Cinque Terre panorama. On the upper floor, there are 2 double bedrooms with a bathroom with shower and a large hallway. The property provides sleeping space for a total of 12+2 people. The church has a simple layout, with a single rectangular nave ending with an apse. Its façade was renovated in the 1800s.

THE HISTORY OF THE HERMITAGE OF SANTA MARIA MADDALENA

The complex, previously dedicated to San Lorenzo del Terriccio, was the home of a community of Benedictine monks affiliated with the Monastery of San Gerolamo della Cervara near Portofino, whose first mention dates back to 1244. In 1327, the monastery, abandoned and threatening ruin, was entrusted by the Monterosso community to Fra Bartolomeo da Vicenza, and later in 1478, Pope Sixtus IV sanctioned the union of the Hermitage with the Benedictine congregation of Saint Giustina in Padua and the Cervara monastery, to which it remained connected until its extinction in the 18th century.
