THE HISTORY OF HOTEL POSTA

The history of the Palazzo del Capitano del Popolo began way back in 1280, when it was constructed during the twilight of the rule of Countess Matilda of Canossa and at the dawn of the Age of the Communes, and became the residence of the ‘Capitano del Popolo’, the new figure elected to govern the city.

In the 1400s, it was the residence of Sigismondo d'Este and it eventually became an inn in 1515, with the evocative name of the "Locanda del Cappello Rosso" or ‘Inn of the Red Hat’.

The last major renovation dates back to the last century, when the hotel assumed the appearance that it still retains today. It is undoubtedly one of Italy's oldest establishments offering hospitality, as it celebrated its 500th anniversary as a hotel in 2015!

Since the 1920s, Hotel Posta has been managed by the Sidoli-Terrachini family, who have experienced an exhilarating and enduring story of passion and love for the art of welcoming guests. Their undoubted recipe for success makes this hotel a prestigious residence that is perfect for business or leisure travel in the heart of the Emilian plain.

PLACES OF INTEREST IN THE VICINITY

Very close to the Hotel are the elegant Palazzo del Monte di Pietà, Palazzo Bussetti, designed by Bernini, the Baptistery, the restored Romanesque Cathedral, the Basilica of San Prospero containing frescoes by Procaccini, the Municipal Theatre and the Basilica della Ghiara.

Strolling through the centre, visitors can indulge in shopping in one of the numerous gastronomic shops. The area is known worldwide for the flavours of its homemade pasta, its exquisite cured meats and salami, renowned balsamic vinegar, Parmigiano Reggiano cheese and wide variety of locally produced wines.

For those who appreciate modern art, you can admire works at the Collezione Maramotti and Spazio Gerra, and recent permanent installations by Luciano Fabro, Robert Morris and Sol Lewitt, which can all be found in the historical centre's Palazzos, together with works by other contemporary artists.

We also recommend a visit to the Civic Museums, the ‘Museo del Tricolore’ (the Tricolour Flag Museum) – which recounts the fascinating history of the birth of the national flag that originated in Reggio Emilia – and an interesting section dedicated to the Risorgimento and the unification of Italy. The nearby Galleria Parmeggiani contains three fantastic collections from the 19th-century, with artefacts, paintings and antique furniture.

Reggio Emilia is also famous for the 19th-century Romolo Valli Municipal Theatre, one of the most beautiful and serviceable theatres in the whole of Italy, which boasts extraordinary decorations in gilded stucco and a stunning Neo-classical façade. Luciano Pavarotti made his debut at the Teatro Valli, and the first opera by Reggio Emilia composer Alberto Franchetti was performed here in 1888. Nearby, the Ariosto Theatre features late Art Nouveau Liberty-style frescoes.
