In the context of Apulian farmhouses, San Mama stands as a prime example of a 'Masseria a Corte', a substantial agricultural estate characterised by its layout featuring three interconnected courtyards. The property includes an expansive residence occupying the upper level, while the ground floor spans an impressive area of 7,000 square metres. Its roots in the late 1700s are etched into the architectural details of its vaulted ceilings and time-honored majolica tiles. During this period, the compound had already assumed the essence of a genuine agricultural village, complete with a year-round, established community that numbered as many as 100 individuals until the mid-20th century, and swelled further during harvest seasons.

Four centuries later, the Masseria still belongs to the same historic lineage of the Giovinazzi di Ducenta Marquises.

THE HISTORY OF MASSERIA SAN MAMA

Situated in the heart of the Ionian Apulia region, Masseria San Mama is named after a hermit saint hailing from the East, whose image is displayed alongside that of the Virgin Mary in the chapel. The saint’s Byzantine origins evoke the historical heritage of this land, which boasts a wealth of cultural, architectural and artistic influences. Tucked away discreetly and majestically in the midst of the countryside of Puglia, San Mama modestly conceals itself in the depths of a gently rolling valley, surrounded by centuries-old olive trees and natural springs.

The dazzling white of the Masseria’s plasterwork serves to defend it from both the harsh and impetuous winter winds and the climatic intrusiveness of the long, hot summers. Some old plans indicate a rural settlement of some significance dating back as early as the 12th century, but the estate truly came into its own around 1756 thanks to Ciro Giovinazzi.
