PALAZZO CALCIATI CROTTI, A HIDDEN GEM IN THE HEART OF CREMONA

Palazzo Calciati Crotti was commissioned by Count Count Cesare Calciati, who oversaw its construction between 1763 and 1766. This distinguished noble residence has meticulously preserved its interior decorations intact, including its splendid furniture, tapestries and furnishings. It is perfectly located at n° 1, Via Palestro, at the heart of Cremona's historic centre. The history of this magnificent edifice is deeply intertwined with the enduring legacy of the Calciati family, who remain its proud owners today, represented by Countesses Anna and Giuseppina Calciati Crotti. Over the years, the Palazzo has been enriched with sumptuous decorative elements, graced by frescoes from renowned Cremonese school painters. It was expertly restored between 2012 and 2015.

Following its restoration, the owners resolved to share the splendour of this beautiful building with the public. They embarked on two primary avenues: firstly, by offering guided tours of the Palazzo, making it accessible by appointment; and secondly, by transforming it into an exquisite venue for weddings, private events, meetings and concerts.

THE HISTORY OF PALAZZO CALCIATI CROTTI

After ascending the monumental staircase, visitors are welcomed into the grand gallery adorned with 28 prints representing various European capitals. The ballroom takes centre stage, graced by two Murano glass chandeliers from the 18th century, reflecting the prevailing style that defines all aspects of its furnishings, lounges and tapestries. Among the curious highlights is a chair located in the bedroom, famously occupied by Mussolini in 1923, and an original folding altar crafted from polychrome marble. The displayed documentary section is also intriguing, with family registers and ledgers on view. Noteworthy among the treasures is the original engraving of the ‘Città Modello’ (Ideal City) project conceived by Count Carlo Crotti in 1844, now presented in a facsimile reprint by Francesco Pagliari. The present condition of Palazzo Calciati Crotti is the result of meticulous restoration efforts overseen by Orazio Zanardi Landi, whose name is closely associated with Castello di Rivalta (also a member of the A.D.S.I. Italian Historical Residences Association’) in the province of Piacenza, and with the circuit of castles in the Duchy of Parma, Piacenza and Pontremoli.
