THE HISTORY OF PALAZZO DEL POGGIANO

The first notarial sources documenting the existence of the Tumba Pozani date back to the first half of the 14th century (the ancient term ‘tumba’ indicated an elevated place, and included both the presence of a fortified building and the surrounding lands over which the fortress exercised its jurisdiction, essentially identifying itself as a small fiefdom). Located in the hilly, rural hinterland of Rimini, it belonged to the Malatesta family throughout the 15th century, albeit in alternance with several other owners. The existence of a mill in Pozano, however, is documented right back in the mid-13th century, even before the settlement became part of the Malatesta fiefdom.

The fortified Palazzo and the adjoining lands, which were a highly valuable asset, were in fact coveted by many important local dynasties, as well as others further afield. The Malatesta family were succeeded by, among others, the Bentivoglio, Montefeltro, Nardini, Della Rovere, Doria, Gonzaga and Medici dynasties, until it passed in the 19th century to the Tosis, an important local family whose name was given to the property for a long period of time. The Second World War was followed by years of decay and abandonment at the Palazzo until the recent restoration (2000 - 2008) was commissioned by the current owners, in collaboration with the Archaeology, Fine Arts and Landscape Superintendency.

Originally used as a hunting lodge by the Malatesta family, with elements characteristic of a fortress that are still in evidence even today (for example, the compact walls and narrow apertures and the absence of any decorative elements), the building underwent gradual expansion and remodelling over time until it changed its architectural vocation in the 19th century, was transformed into a "Palazzo" and became a rural summer residence. Evidence of a centuries-old oil-making tradition can still be observed today, in the form of the nearby oil mill which has been recuperated from the property’s ancient kitchens. Significant modifications and extensions were then superimposed over the course of the centuries, such as the small, frescoed 19th century church adjacent to the main complex, and the suggestive 17th-century staircase facing onto the courtyard and leading on to the entrances to the Palazzo’s ‘noble’ first floor. The furnishings and decorations that characterise the latter date back to the time when it was owned by the Tosi family (1834-1940).

Palazzo del Poggiano is surrounded by a large, variegated park, complimenting it beautifully and featuring centuries-old trees, such as the beautiful avenue of linden trees that leads visitors up to its entrance.
