THE HISTORY OF PALAZZO MARTINI

Palazzo Martini was originally an ancient Conventino, formerly owned by the ‘Monastero delle Clarisse Eremite’ monastery of Fara in Sabina. It was constructed in the 15th century on the remains of a Sabine patrician villa and served as the guesthouse of the cloistered order. Entirely built using locally sourced natural stone in an irregular and rustic style typical of ancient Roman architecture, it originally boasted a finely frescoed floor. The building was lowered at a later date to enable the Cardinal and high-ranking prelates who were guests at neighbouring Palazzo Orsini a free view of the Tiber Valley and Rome. It retained its original architectural features and function until the late 18th century, when it became the private property of the Lupi family.

In the 18th century, it was adorned with exquisite frescoes typical of the region and was outfitted with essential amenities to accommodate the extended visits of esteemed prelates visiting the monastery. It has retained its rich history and architectural features in their original state. The property boasts a spacious subterranean cistern alongside storage chambers for food and winter provisions. In the adjacent small cloister are the ancient stables that once housed horses. This structure is situated on the fortified walls that once shielded the medieval village.

During the last World War, Palazzo Martini suffered bombing that caused minor damage to its structures, which were subsequently restored after the war. It later came into the ownership of the Martini family, who still own it unchanged, and it is now used for private events and cultural activities.
