PALAZZO PIERANTONI: HOSTEL IN THE HEART OF FOLIGNO

An excellent representation of magnificent 17th-century architecture, Palazzo Pierantoni comprises structures from various different historical periods. It still preserves a nymphaeum with remnants of the original garden and a pergola. From 1879 until 1981, it was a Monastery for Augustinian nuns from St Mary of Bethlehem.

It is easily accessible, as it is just a few metres away from the railway and bus station. Despite being in the heart of the city, it is nevertheless immersed in silence and tranquillity. Guests have access to the internal garden, where they can spend time reading, relaxing or socialising with other visitors. The hostel also provides ample private parking and a restaurant with seating for over 100 people.

THE HISTORY OF PALAZZO PIERANTONI

The Palazzo was constructed in the mid-17th century and underwent much structural reconfiguration between the 16th and the 18th centuries. It was the Pierantoni family who reunified the pre-existing structures and constructed a cohesive building with six window axes that marks the end of the street with the same name and overlooks the rear garden, presenting an elegant façade adorned with two balconies featuring decorative railings.

On the ‘piano nobile’ floor, three rooms feature painted vaults: namely, the Rooms of Olympus, Cupid and Apollo. The main reception hall, identifiable primarily by its larger size, has none of the original paintings left, but is distinguished by a beautiful stucco fireplace bearing what is believed to be the coat of arms of the Pierantoni family. The ‘Room of Love’ depicts Cupid at its centre, surrounded by four panels depicting other characters from Greco-Roman mythology. The frescoed vault is attributed to Giovan Battista Michelini (Foligno 1604-1655), while the Room of Olympus was decorated by Gian Domenico Mattei (Foligno-Rome ?-1706).
