PALAZZO LODRON

Significant for its art and history, the Palazzo been the residence of the Lodron family since 1456. In the second half of the 16th century, construction work began on the property, incorporating the existing buildings. An inscription above the entrance portal indicates that it was erected on pre-existing structures at the behest of Count Nicoló Lodron in 1593. No further exterior works have been carried out since that period.

The palace is arranged on three sides, with a long central body and two wings. The central section is protected facing the valley by a wall with corner towers. Since 2010, the south wing has housed the ‘Relais Palazzo Lodron’, while the north wing is home to the winery. After passing through the southern gate leading into the palace courtyard, one is immersed in greenery filled with cherry trees. Looking towards the hills, there is a perimeter wall and a charming fountain featuring a lion holding the motto 'Fortitudo', the emblem of the Lodron family. In front is the main entrance to the Palazzo, surmounted by a limestone statue representing Nicolò himself. The main portal of the north wing leads to a beautiful tree-lined avenue containing horse chestnut trees, flanked by two walls leading to the locality of Santa Lucia. The Renaissance Palazzo is most notably memorable for being the site of the tribunal during the witch trials that took place between 1647 and 1717.

THE LODRON FAMILY

The Lodron family, one of the most important noble dynasties in Trentino, originated from the area north of Lake Idro. They were first documented in the year 900 as owning landholdings in the Giudicarie, Rendena and Chiese valleys. They arrived in Vallagarina around the mid-1400s, when they were summoned to the region by the Prince-Bishop of Trento, Giorgio Hack, who was experiencing problems with some of his feudal lords. Among the dissidents were the Counts of Castelbarco, who had been refusing for several years to grant him the renewal of the fortresses of Castelnuovo, Castellano, Nomi and Castelcorno. The Bishop duly commissioned the Lodron family to strike out against the disloyal feudal lords, and it was Marco of Caderzone, together with his father Giorgio and his uncle Pietro, who successfully occupied Castelnuovo (or Castel Noarna, as it was called) and forced the surrender of the other three castles. As a reward, the Bishop bestowed the castles of Castelnuovo and Castellano on the Lodron family as feudal holdings.

MOZART AND THE LODRON FAMILY

Countess Antonia Lodron was a close friend of the Mozarts, who lived on the very same street as she did. Wolfgang Amadeus and his sister Nannerl gave piano lessons to the Countess's daughters and indeed the Concerto for Three Pianos, K242, was composed by Mozart for Countess Antonia and her daughters Aloisia and Giuseppa Lodron. The concerto, along with two divertimentos from 1776-77, namely K247 and K278, known as Lodronsche Nachtmusiken (Lodron Night Music), were dedicated to the countess herself.

During his trip to Italy in 1776, Mozart was a guest of the Lodron Counts, and the composer chose to immortalise his stay with them in one of his works: when Don Giovanni sings a duet with Leporello, he enthuses about Marzemino, the typical wine of Vallagarina: "Pour the wine! Most excellent Marzemino!"
