WINE ESTATE OF PIETRA PORZIA IN FRASCATI

The historic house is a villa of the first half of the twentieth century designed by one of the most important architects of the period, the annexed guesthouse incorporates a fourteenth-century tower, the villa and  the guesthouse are part of the Tenuta di Pietra Porzia, 116 acres in a single body planted with  vineyards and olive trees in the Frascati area.

The Wine  Estate, a large amphitheater located in what was once the Regillo Lake, was for centuries the property of Marco Porzio Catone (hence its name) then of the Colonna and Borghese (feudal lords of the area) to be finally sold in 1714 to the apostolic chamber and from about a century to the Giulini who gave it its present look, with the long cypress avenue and the villa, a national monument in pure postmodern style.

From the villa you can admire a spectacular landscape that goes from Rome to the Castelli Romani, the Sabina mountains, the  vineyards that surround the cellar and the company oil mill, in the basement of the cellar opens a spectacular cave dug into the tuff 2000 years ago.

An underground lake fed by a spring, recently rediscovered, occupies the space of an ancient temple dedicated to a water nymph.

The ancient cellar is made up of a succession of galleries, for a development of 400 m, dug into the tuff at a depth of 15 m in Roman times as the terminal cistern of the Claudian aqueduct.

The whole estate is subject to landscape bond as it is one of the very few still intact landscapes of the Castelli Romani.

The villa and the annexed guesthouse have been transformed into a farmhouse with 12 rooms with bathroom, swimming pool, typical restaurant in a large hall that opens onto the garden, in absolute silence.

HE HISTORY OF ESTATE DI PIETRA PORZIA

In 496 BC, in a large amphitheater with the lake Regillo in the center, Romans and Latins face off in a tough battle; in the decisive moment Dioscuri, twin sons of Jupiter, descend from heaven and lead the Romans to victory.

The theater of the battle is today the Tenuta di Pietra Porzia, a stream in the center of the property recalls the ancient lake, the cave with long corridors dug  2000 years ago, testifies to an agricultural tradition that in 1714 saw the company divided among the properties papals of Clement XI and the princes Colonna and Borghese. The date of 1892 engraved in the bricks recalls the birth of the modern cellar which replaces the ancient one excavated in the tuff of the Roman era.

With the grandfather of the current owners, the Giulini, the company, 118 acres in a single body, takes on its current look with the large vineyard and olive grove in the upper part of the amphitheater.

91 acres of vineyards are planted with Malvasia del Lazio Trebbiano, Greco and Bombino, used in Frascati., Montepulciano, Merlot and Lecinaro for Castelli Romani Rosso and Lecino.

27 acres of olive groves are planted with Frantoio, Leccino, Moraiolo and the local variety Carboncella for extra-virgin olive oil.

Price € 60 per person (minimum 6 people) a walk of about 10 minutes through the vineyards leads to the source and the underground lake, followed by a visit to the cellar and the cave with tasting
