Contact the abode

Nestled in the picturesque Venetian countryside, within Castello di Godego, in the province of Treviso, Villa Caprera is an 18th-century gem that exudes the timeless charm of its era. A typical country manor, Villa Caprera may not possess the imposing grandeur of larger Venetian villas, but it embraces an intimate and welcoming atmosphere that truly reflects its human-scale charm. The Villa is surrounded by an extensive six-hectare park, where enchanting pathways wind through centuries-old trees, native flora, and blooming gardens. Here, you'll encounter not only domestic animals but also a thriving ecosystem of wildlife that has found refuge within this welcoming and secure environment. The park serves as an architectural buffer, creating a sanctuary around the villa, preserving it as a precious treasure. Adding to the natural allure, the estate features two watercourses: the Muson stream, which defines the front boundary of the property, and the Musonello, an irrigation channel that meanders through the park and passes beneath the Villa, historically serving as a means to cool the rooms during the summer months. THE HISTORY OF VILLA CAPRERA

Originally owned by noblewoman Foscarini, Villa Caprera made its first appearance in historical records on 17 March 1778, in connection with a project to regulate the Muson stream and the Musonello canal in the Castello di Godego area. In the 19th century, the owner, a general in Garibaldi's army whose identity remains unknown, decided to name the Villa in honour of the national “Hero of Two Worlds”, referring to Garibaldi’s close connections to Caprera. Subsequently, in 1830, the Bassanese road, connecting Bassano to Castelfranco Veneto, was named after this estate and has retained the name ever since. In the 20th century, Villa Caprera became the property of the descendants of Ubaldo Serena, a family in Castelfranco Veneto well known for their distillation business. It served as their country residence.

On 20 November 1947, it became the permanent home of Marquis Vincenzo D'Ayala Valve, a knight of the Order of Malta, of Spanish origin and born in Naples in 1905, who married Silvia, one of Ubaldo's daughters. During the Second World War, the Germans used the Villa as a base, reportedly even using the tallest poplar tree in the park as an observation post to control the territory. The cellars were converted into refrigeration rooms for storing food supplies. After the war, Villa Caprera became a regular gathering place for European nobility, thanks to the numerous parties hosted by the owners. Among the most distinguished guests were Queen Elizabeth II and the Duke of Genoa.

Following the death of Marquis Ayala Valve in 1995, his heirs abandoned the Villa, leading to serious deterioration in both the building and the park. It was only through the efforts of Fabrizio and Gloria Santi, the new owners, that Villa Caprera has been restored to its former splendour. The restoration of the Villa and the park stands as a testament to the commitment of the Santi family to the local artistic and cultural heritage. Today, thanks to their dedication, Villa Caprera offers the opportunity to experience magical moments that only a history so rich can evoke.
