THE HISTORY OF VILLA VIVALDI PASQUA

One may not truly grasp the extent of beauty hidden beyond a simple wall with ocher shades. However, the reality is that Vico XII San Giovanni, in the heart of Villanova, has the extraordinary role of safeguarding a unique architectural gem: Villa Vivaldi Pasqua.

The exact date of its construction remains unclear, but we know with certainty that in the second half of the 18th century, the Villa served as a summer residence or hunting lodge for the Vivaldi family. All around it was an extensive area full of vegetable gardens and vineyards, in which three churches stood: namely San Rocco, San Giovanni and San Mauro.

A STORY SPANNING FOUR CENTURIES

The 18th century was indeed a significant period for the Sardinian economy, thanks to the Savoy reforms that allowed for increased trade and also due to the obligation imposed on owners to renovate their homes. The hunting lodge was in fact embellished and made even more spacious by order of Don Pietro Vivaldi, Marquis of Trivigno and Pasqua,  the first to arrive in Sardinia with the aim of establishing fishponds in the south of the island.  The house's construction work was then completed in 1801, with the initial small nucleus transformed into a luxurious villa.

Unfortunately, the situation changed dramatically because of a financial collapse which forced both the sale and rental of some fishponds, including the transfer of some of the family's properties. In 1850, Villa Vivaldi was sold to Count Calvi of Milan, who chose not to live there, but only to rent it, resulting in its gradual deterioration.

In the 1970sRosabianca , daughter of industrialist Marino Cao, successfully restored the Villa in a skilful and accurate manner, bringing it back to life after purchasing it from the last heiress of the Calvi family, Donna Giulia Calvi.

THE STRUCTURE OF VILLA VIVALDI

Villa Vivaldi is an exquisite example of 18th-century architecture in the centre of Cagliari. Its history and attention to detail make it a perfect setting for a wedding in Sardinia and, as reported in a document published by the Ministry for Cultural Heritage and Activities (MIBAC), it is:

“ … the only one remaining among the suburban villas from the end of the 18th century on the outskirts of the ancient  district of Villanova. Today (Villa Vivaldi) is declared by the Ministry for Cultural Heritage and Activities as a Historical Residence, in accordance with Legislative Decree 42/2004 because it is a unique ensemble with the Villa, the Hanging Garden, the Stables and the Vegetable Gardens, and of exceptional importance for the city of Cagliari".

THE STABLE ROOM

This is another remarkable example of architecture from the period, consisting of five bays with ribbed vaults, obtained with finely restored exposed solid bricks, supported by pillars with capitals in canton stone. The openings, originally used for the passage of carriages and horses, have been closed over the years due to adjacent constructions, and have today been transformed into niches with windows framed by restored original tuff.

THE HANGING ROOF GARDEN

The Hanging Roof Garden of Villa Vivaldi is undeniably one of the jewels of the property. Its wonderful, fragrant greenery, meticulously tended by skilled gardeners and the owner of the Villa, radiates beauty day and night, creating a true oasis of serenity and tranquility in the heart of Cagliari. Within this enchanting space, there is an array of fruit trees and diverse flower varieties, decorative planters and wrought-iron tables and chairs where guests can relax and savour the extraordinarily peaceful atmosphere.

THE VEGETABLE GARDENS

A double flight of stairs, with a railing beautifully crafted in iron with plant and geometric ornaments, connects the main garden with the ‘Orti’ vegetable garden. What was once a cultivated area with lush gardens and orchards now consists of spacious lawns with grand gazebos that can seat up to 300 people.

THE GLORIETTE

Framing the hanging garden is a charming Gloriette with five semi-circular arches that adds a tone of grandeur to the garden area.

PLACES OF INTEREST IN THE VICINITY: VILLA VIVALDI AND THE SURROUNDING AREA

The Villanova district extends across a large part of the city. Continuing the tour of its wonders, visitors can also admire magnificent Art Nouveau ‘Liberty-style’ palazzos and villas, such as the famous Palazzo Valdes in Viale Regina Elena. At the end of the Terrapieno Embankment are the Public Gardens, a park surrounded by greenery with various native and exotic botanical species, further enhanced by the presence of fountains and marble sculptures, and by the neo-Classical building of the former ‘Polveriera’ (Powder Magazine), which today houses the Municipal Art Gallery of Cagliari.

The so-called ‘new’ part of Villanova also showcases numerous historical splendours, such as Palazzina Lixi Contini, the Remembrance Park with the War Memorial by Ubaldo Badas and the former slaughterhouse of Cagliari, ExMà, now a centre for art and culture. Completing the picture is the monumental eclectic-style Command Building of the Carabinieri Legion of Sardinia. For those who love to walk around, and partake in a little shopping, Via Garibaldi, Via Sonnino, Via Paoli and Via Alghero offer a wide choice of shops and clothing boutiques, as well as bars, pastry shops and cafés. For a good lunch or a typical Sardinian dinner, there are many restaurants on Via San Giovanni, in the oldest part of the neighbourhood, as well as bars and small local places where you can enjoy a great drink after sunset.
