Piemonte: Amidst the Gentle Landscapes of Rice Fields and Vineyards

    Private Residences Revealed

    • Principato di Lucedio
The Abbey of Santa Maria di Lucedio was founded as a fortified structure in 1123 by Cistercian monks from Burgundy, who drained the land and, by the mid-1400s, introduced rice cultivation to Italy. Over time, the abbey became a point of contention between Italian noble families, passing from the Gonzaga family to the Savoys, then to Napoleon’s ownership, and finally to the Marquis Giovanni Gozzani di San Giorgio, ancestor of the current owners. In 1861, it was elevated to the rank of Principality. Architecturally significant, it is now home to a large and modern agricultural business producing top-quality rice.
    • Castle of Gabiano
A Gothic residence, with its earliest structure dating back to the 7th-8th century, featuring three circular towers, a square keep, bifore windows, Guelph and Ghibelline battlements, two walls, and a watchtower overlooking the valley. The 12th-century ancient cellar and the “infernot” (underground wine cellars) are the historic identity of this residence, which overlooks the Po River valley, preserving centuries of winemaking tradition and history. The medieval village adjacent to the castle, with its ancient houses, vinegar cellar, gravel roads, and centuries-old park with a boxwood hedge maze, offers a journey back in time, walking among beech and larch trees, exposed brick walls, and river stones.
