Chigi Castle, the residence of the Chigi Family, is nestled in the heart of the Castel Fusano natural reserve and spans thirty-three hectares near the sea. This wildlife paradise has been a beloved retreat for several generations of the Family, who acquired it in 1750—once a favored hunting ground, now a secluded haven far from the bustle of daily life, offering a true earthly paradise. Hidden within the Mediterranean scrub and surrounded by monumental centuries-old pines, Chigi Castle was described in the 19th century by Antonio Nibby as an “Enchanted palace in a deserted land.”
This unique residence was commissioned by Cardinal Giulio Sacchetti in 1620, who entrusted Girolamo Rainaldi with transforming the villa into a castle-like structure and engaged the young artist Pietro da Cortona. Castel Fusano became Pietro da Cortona’s second “Roman” commission, where he fully frescoed the Baroque chapel on the first floor and, together with his apprentices, painted the Gallery of Geographical Maps on the noble floor.
The vast land surrounding the estate lies in the heart of what the Romans once called the Agro Laurentino—a magnificent stretch of Roman countryside between the Tiber River and the sea, still preserving its original 18th- and 19th-century characteristics.
