Castello di Piovera

Beds: 2 | Halls for events: 3 | Wedding Halls: 2

The Castle of Piovera is a very scenic articulated structure, surrounded by a moat and a vast park. Visitors can explore the monumental complex on foot or aboard vintage cars or an original Red Bus by reserving this very pleasant excursion in advance. In addition to the numerous collections exhibited in the ancient granaries (carriages, carts, agricultural and artisanal tools), the medieval stables have also been transformed into a workshop where the owner holds creative art classes. The cellars are an ideal venue for tastings and temporary exhibitions, while the English Garden provides a number of different locations where weddings, private events and corporate conventions can be held. The Castle is located in a flat expanse of land, conveniently close to the main north-western motorways, and just 5 km from the Alessandria Est exit on the A21 Torino-Piacenza stretch of the motorway.

The history of Castello di Piovera
The Balbi di Piovera Castle is situated in the rural village of Piovera, and its imposing façade dominates the small square. It took on the appearance of a mighty fortress in 1300 under the Milanese Visconti family. In subsequent eras, it has belonged to the Spaniards and the French, and it then passed from the Savoys to the Balbi family. Count Niccolò Calvi di Bergolo has been its owner since 1967.

The Castle is a horseshoe-shaped fortress and is one of the largest of its kind in the region. It possesses oval towers and two massive quadrangular towers which are all protected by a moat and a defensive wall. The planting of a vast 30-hectare English-style park and the construction of buildings dating back to the 18th century, situated next to the garden and featuring rare, centuries- old trees, have given the entire ensemble a decidedly romantic appearance. The complex can be visited in its entirety and is furnished throughout from top to bottom – indeed from its cellars to the turrets of its towers. Inside the Castle, the rooms have remained as enchantingly authentic as though they were still lived in: mannequins dressed in period clothing animate the different salons, and there is a modern and extraordinarily inventive contrast provided by the artworks of Niccolò Calvi di Bergolo, the versatile and authentic artist and owner of the castle. The rural hamlet was originally built in front of the castle and the houses there still pay homage to it today. They now form part of the estate and house the Museum of Ancient Crafts.
