The story of Castello Quistini
Also known as Palazzo Porcellaga, taken after the surname of the nobleman Ottaviano who ordered its construction in 1560 as a fortified residence instead of the castle in Rovato.
It was built in an area in which Venetian and French domination had alternated over the years, which meant it had often been used as a garrison for the various troops.
During the second half of the 16th century, it was common practice for the nobility to build their fortified residences in the countryside, surrounded by robust walls to defend and protect them from the numerous battles that were fought during this period. Castello Quistini is one of the last testimonials of this type of architecture and is surrounded by an irregular pentagonal wall formation, which is comparatively thin, but which has five towers, one at each corner and a 4-storey tower within.
Sarnico stone or “pietra serena” as it is also called and which is typical of the Lake Iseo area, was used for the construction of the Castle, and in fact many other Palazzos and farmsteads in Franciacorta were built using this same material.
Although part of the Castle is privately owned, it is possible to visit some of the rooms, including the Sala Grottesca containing the “grotesque” frescoes and the Salone, which, at 150 square metres in size, represents the largest single-span reception room in the Franciacorta region.
