VesConte – Palazzo Cozza Caposavi, is located in the 16th-century palace of the Counts Cozza Caposavi of Bolsena. It has been awarded by the best rankings in the sector for 2019 and 2020 (Forbes, CondèNast Traveller, and others), and is not a standard hotel, but a special italian category called “albergo diffuso” with 25 beds. It is located in the three blocks that make up the palace and has a museum, a wine bar, and a restaurant (wich is open only for groups).
In the 16th century, the basement of the palace housed the Ostello della Corona, the only inn in Bolsena. Still a favorite destination for figures from all fields of art and science, the palace has been visited over the years by personalities such as Stendhal, Guglielmo Marconi, members of royal and European families, two popes, directors of the caliber of Fellini, and contemporary Oscar winners and artists who still enjoy this tradition of hospitality, confirming Palazzo Cozza Caposavi as one of the landmarks of northern Lazio after centuries.
Palazzo Cozza Caposavi is also an House Museum, and it boasts a history of over 500 years. It currently houses the largest private art collection open to the public in the entire province of Viterbo. Belonging to the Cozza Caposavi family, who have maintained ownership throughout the centuries, the palace is a living monument that bears witness to the elegance and prestige of its long heritage.
The museum tour will take you through the ages, allowing you to explore rooms that have hosted some illustrious figures, including Stendhal, Fellini, Marconi, and Verga, and welcomed members of European royal families and distinguished travelers. During your visit, the audio guide will accompany you through a detailed narrative. Photography is welcome, but we kindly ask you to tag VesConte-Palazzo Cozza Caposavi in your posts. The Palazzo del Conte is a treasure shared with the community, and we hope your visit will be full of discoveries and beauty.

In the 16th century, the entire territory of Viterbo was under the direct influence of the Farnese family, who were responsible for the construction of important palaces such as Villa Lante in Bagnaia and Villa Farnese in Caprarola. The Cozza Caposavi palace was built around 1561 at the behest of Cardinal Tiberio Crispo, governor of the Papal States in Bolsena and son of Silvia Ruffini, a widow who became the concubine of Alessandro Farnese, the future Pope Paul III.
After the cardinal’s departure from Bolsena, the palace was divided between the Cozza and Caposavi families and remained so until the 18th century, when the two families were united in marriage, reuniting the palaces in their original form as conceived by Crispo. The residence remained united until the 1930s, when Nicola Cozza sold the part facing the Rocca to Rodolfo del Drago, who already owned a disused building in the castle district, “il ganarone,” inherited from the Spada Princes and which, at the beginning of the 20th century, was merged with Palazzo Cozza, becoming the current complex known as “del Drago.” Since then, the two buildings have been divided once again.
