Tenuta di Fiorano in Rome
The residences currently present within the Fiorano Estate are part of a unified project that dates back to the 17th century, although its history is much older. The complex of buildings, starting from the Appian Way, includes the ‘Casale di Fiorano’, formerly the property of the Convent of San Saba in the 10th century and referred to as a ‘fortified farmhouse’ in the 12th century, which represents the oldest part of the Estate.

Moving closer to its centre, one can see the ‘Casali di Fioranello’, buildings dating back to the 19th century, which have a complex structure and elegant architectural elements dominated by a terrace with a view of Rome. These were originally designed to be the master residences.
At the heart of the Estate is a spacious structure currently dedicated to hospitality and events of various kinds, set within a Park created in the last century by Prince Paolo Boncompagni Ludovisi. It houses a collection of rare plants from all over the world and features a vast representation of plant varieties from the Appian Way Regional Park. It is flanked by the Tenuta’s small chapel, which was constructed in the 18th century.
The Estate is also the birthplace of Fiorano Bianco and Fiorano Rosso wines, whose production has been expanded and promoted globally for many years by Prince Alessandrojacopo Boncompagni Ludovisi.

The history of Tenuta di Fiorano
The Fiorano Estate is located deep in the Roman countryside, an area that has been cultivated and inhabited since Roman times. Its story has run on parallel lines with the history of Rome itself, with alternating vicissitude of succession until it became the property of the Boncompagni Ludovisi family.
Moving closer to present time, it was inherited in the 19th century by Prince Baldassarre Boncompagni Ludovisi, a renowned mathematician and bibliophile. He was succeeded by Francesco Boncompagni Ludovisi, Governor of Rome and Minister of State, who was extremely dedicated to the agricultural aspects of managing the Estate.
His work was continued by Prince Alberico Boncompagni Ludovisi who, following his father’s example, made significant improvements by constructing new outbuildings, planting vineyards and cultivating cereal crops. The Tenuta was one of the first land holdings to adopt organic farming and it was here that Fiorano wine was conceived and first produced.
Prince Alessandrojacopo Boncompagni Ludovisi is the current owner. In the spirit of ongoing continuity, he has been sure to uphold the same principles of land stewardship, cereal and fruit production, as well as cultivation of the famous Fiorano wine.
