Villa Malfatti

A 19th-century villa surrounded by a vast italian and english-style park, delimited by a romantic baroque gateway, Villa Malfatti, set in a large park in the heart of Canavese area, has been the home of the descendants of Trentino baron Stefano Malfatti di Monte Tretto for five generations. He acquired and restored this historical residence at the end of the 19th century.

On the side of the main façade, four arches framed by antique roses delimit a spacious atrium veranda, enabling guests to admire views of the beautiful garden as they are welcomed with an aperitif under its cover. The main entrance is dominated by a scissor staircase that opens onto the rear side. The ground floor consists of a succession of reception rooms and boudoirs. The Viennese- style frescoed dining room is particularly original.

On the first and second floors, a corridor divides two parallel rows of rooms and sitting rooms. The library houses a vast collection of 19th and 20th-century works. All the rooms are frescoed and furnished with 19th-century furniture.

Adjoining the Villa is a rustic Piedmontese-style brick building.

The design of the park is still faithful to its original plan: the southern side follows the Italianate style, while the northern side features English landscaping. Of special note is a centuries-old magnolia flanked by enormous Atlantic cedars, lime trees and palms. Secular potted lemon plants are sheltered in the lemon house during the winter months.

The Villa is accessed via an imposing wrought-iron gate, surmounted by the family coat of arms.

The history of villa malfatti
The Villa was built at the beginning of the 19th century by opera singer Teresa Belloc, who was much loved by celebrated composer Rossini, and who was the inspiration for his opera ‘La Gazza Ladra’ (‘The Thieving Magpie’). The Latin inscription “AMPHION THEBES THERESIA VILLAM” (which translates as ‘Amphion of Thebes, Theresia’s Villa’) is displayed below the grand atrium. With these words, the singer wanted to recall that she had been able to have the Villa built thanks to her great singing talent, just as Amphion had used the sound of his lyre to transport bricks for the construction of the walls of Thebes.

In 1888, the Villa was purchased and partially modified by Baron Stefano Malfatti di Monte Tretto. There have been no further interventions since that time, and the residence remains the home of the Malfatti descendants. The current appearance of the building is inspired by a blend of classical and baroque architecture, with two large terraces.
