MEDIEVAL CASTLE OF CASTELLAMMARE DI STABIA

The Medieval Castle of Castellammare di Stabia is located in one of the most picturesque stretches of the Sorrentine Peninsula, overlooking the Gulf of Naples. It was built by the Duke of Sorrento in the 9th century to guard the narrow stretch of coastline between the foothills of the Mount Faito mountain range and the sea, protecting the duke’s territory from potential infiltration by enemy armies. Over the course of the centuries, the Castle has undergone various transformations, primarily as a direct response to the changing methods of warfare.

The Castle is entered via a spacious entrance courtyard with a well. The monumental Renaissance-style staircase then leads into a garden adorned with fountains, water features and a fishpond. Adjacent to the garden, where the ancient moat used to be located, is a ‘jardin d'hiver’ winter garden with a view of the sea and Vesuvius, which is perfectly positioned for hosting unforgettable gala events for up to 500 guests.

A romantic and evocative stroll along the ancient walls and over the drawbridge takes guests to internal halls embellished with ancient portals and Renaissance fireplaces in perfect working order, which further add to the Castle’s welcoming yet refined atmosphere.

THE HISTORY OF THE MEDIEVAL CASTLE OF CASTELLAMMARE DI STABIA

The Medieval Castle was originally owned, among others, by the D'Anjou family. In 1538, it was given as a dowry by Charles V of Habsburg to his daughter Margherita when she married Ottavio Farnese. In the 17th century, the Castle lost its original function as a fortress and fell into ruin, thereby lending it a romantic appearance that made it a dominant feature of the landscape and a favoured subject for painters, draughtsmen and engravers like Pitloo, Duclère, Pinelli, Gigante, Carelli, Gaeta and many other artists from the School of Posillipo.
