HE MONUMENTAL COMPLEX OF MASSERIA SPINA IN MONOPOLY EMBRACES AN INTERESTING CROSS-SECTION, FROM THE HIGH AND LATE MIDDLE AGES RIGHT UP TO THE MODERN AGE

The first owner of Masseria Spina Resort was Francesco de Chiantera, who bequeathed to his son Vito “ninety works in three bodies” in the place then known as San Basilio and later named Spina after the family had acquired it through marriage.

On 19 August 1587, Giacomo Spina married Vittoria de Chiantera. Their daughter brought “a plot of land with caves, grottos, oil mills and other things” as a dowry to the Ammazzalorsa family between the second half of the 16th century and the first half of the 17th century.

In 1760, Pasquale Ammazzalorsa sold the ancient Masseria Spina, containing “75 ‘opere’ or units of olive and 12 ‘tomomoli’ (also ‘units’) of land”, to Vito Giuseppe Martinelli.

The family's business activities, which included the trading of fabrics and silks, as well as the buying and selling of oil and wine, significantly increased, and resulted in their rapidly accumulating enormous wealth.

Clemente, the son of Francesco Paolo and Francesca Antonacci, married Laura Correale of the Patrizi di Sorrento dynasty on 25 December 1852. They had two daughters, Maria and Chiara, who went on to marry two brothers from the Meo family.

Subsequent generations of the Meo-Evoli family have been the owners of Masseria Spina ever since 1890.

Nori Meo-Evoli, who lives at Masseria Spina with her children, dedicates all her attention, commitment and passion to curating this architectural complex. Thanks to her profession as a restorer of cultural heritage, she personally directs and drives the significant potential for activities based on tourism at this historical location.

THE HISTORY OF MASSERIA SPINA

The Monumental Complex of Masseria Spina offers an intriguing glimpse into the history of Monopoli, spanning from the High and Late Middle Ages to the modern era.

The earliest traces include tombs carved into the rocky cliffs, rock settlements dating back to the 9th century, the smaller Chiesa Minore church from the 11th century, the Towers and the façade of the main building with the adjoining Baroque-style Church of the Immaculate Conception.

Some of the ambiences are decorated with ancient objects from rural peasant communities.
