The Via Francigena, otherwise known as Via Romea and literally meaning ‘the road to Rome that comes from France’ is a cluster of pathways that used to lead pilgrims embarking for the Holy Land either northwards towards France and Europe or southwards in the direction of Rome and on to Puglia.
