Casa La Carrubbazza

Beds: 40

Casa La Carrubbazza is a 19th-century historical house located in San Gregorio di Catania. It was originally an agricultural estate that produced wine and is now a farmhouse immersed in the greenery of a typical Sicilian garden.

Following recent renovation work, this historic mansion has been transformed into a 4-star boutique hotel. The rooms that were once used as a wine cellar now contain three guest rooms per floor. The ‘palmento’ where the wine was once pressed and fermented has been converted into a lounge and communal area. The former storage rooms accommodate three comfortable suites. The building where the grapes were kept has been faithfully reconstructed and now features four bedrooms. The cistern, originally used as a water reservoir for the farm, has been converted into the hotel’s restaurant. The panoramic terrace offers a stunning view of the Gulf of Catania and Mount Etna. Part of the citrus grove has been replanted to create a Mediterranean ornamental garden. Relaxation, hospitality and meticulous attention to detail blend seamlessly, offering an intimate and family-friendly ambiance that promises a unique and unforgettable stay.

The history of Casa La Carrubbazza
La Carrubbazza, spelt with two Rs, two Bs and two Zs, contrary to ‘proper’ Italian nomenclature (but remember that we are in Sicily, a land that is generous, boundless and above all exuberant!), is an ancient 19th-century dwelling immersed in the greenery of a typical Sicilian garden. Historically owned by a noble family from Catania, La Carrubbazza was initially an extensive, thriving vineyard which was transformed into a citrus grove over the passing of the years, before finally being transformed into a boutique hotel. Annetta and Maria, born in 1836 and 1839 respectively, inherited the estate from their maternal aunt after they chose to marry two dashing young men rather than pursuing life in a convent, thereby defying their parents’ wishes. In response, it was decided that they would receive only what was typically reserved for the church community as a dowry. Their aunt, who had no children of her own and disagreed with the parents’ decision, chose to bestow her wealth upon the sisters, dividing the property between them. There is an inscription on the left-hand side of the entrance to the wine press that reads ‘First harvest, 20 September 1887’, marking the presumed completion date of the estate’s transformation. Subsequent generations of Annetta and Maria’s family enclosed the estate with dry stone walls, leaving an opening for the family to pass freely in and out of the property.
